Hello everyone!
Did you know that it’s Carers’ Rights Day this week, on Thursday 23rd November? So what has changed since Carers’ Rights Day last year? Well, probably not a lot. However, there are beginning to be more rights for carers who are in paid employment.
The Carers Leave Act will come into law in 2024 and will, amongst other things, entitle working carers to a week of unpaid leave.
We asked some carers at our Oaklands Dementia Café what rights they would like to have. They said:
The right to be recognised as an expert on the needs of the person I care for;
The right to Carers Allowance for all carers regardless of financial means;
The right to high quality support services.
And what about ‘the right to at least 3 hours of respite from caring every week’? Wouldn’t that be good!
As you may know, we are involved in Manchester’s Dementia Alliance and are pushing for a lot of service improvements locally. The Dementia changemakers meetings have been really helpful in collecting your stories, feedback and ideas. The next one will be at Brunswick Village, M13 (on Thursday 11 January, 1.30pm) and we’ll be talking about your experiences of Care Assessments, home care, daycare, Direct Payments and more!
Please take note below of the nice events coming up. We’d really like to meet up with all of you at our Christmas party. This year it’s at the beautiful Lowry theatre, Salford Quays, where they have an event room with a panoramic view over Old Trafford and the Quays. There’ll be a hot meal, a singer and a DJ. We’ll give as much help as we can to help you find your way there - it will be worth it!
There will also be Christmas treats at the Dementia Cafes in December. And there’s our BIG fundraising concert at the cathedral with top class performances from professionals singers, a school choir, and our very own dementia choirs.

And if you really can’t come and join us, you can still support TDS by purchasing Christmas cards, 2024 calendars, or raffle tickets.

Carers’ Christmas Party
Hi all, I hopeeveryone is looking forward to this year’s Christmas Party - we all are! Thereare still tickets available so it would be wonderful if you can make it. It'sbeing held in the Compass Room at The Lowry Theatre in Salford Quays; therewill be hot food, a wonderful singer – Jimmy – and the fabulous DJ NaturalMystic so we can all end the afternoon with a bit of dance.
We've been luckyenough to secure some funding so tickets are only £10. If you are worried aboutcoming alone, contact me and I can introduce you to others as there are many inthe same boat. If transport is an issue for anyone, please also let usknow. We will have a pick-up point in North Manchester, Wythenshawe Forum andthe Amani Centre.

New this year, our Christmas cards feature a cartoon drawing by our late patron, Tony Husband, and four whimsical and Christmassy-themed hedgehogs by one of our supporters, Marion Evans.
Each pack contains 5 luxury Christmas cards and 5 envelopes.
They cost £5 per pack.
Will you spot yourself in this year’s TDS Calendar? Our 2024 calendar includes over 100 images of our members, carers, volunteers and staff members at our groups, on trips and out and about.

RIP Our Patron, Tony Husband
28-08.1950 - 18.10.2023
We are sorry to announce that our new patron, Tony Husband died suddenly on his way to a meeting in London.
Tony’s own father lived with dementia and Tony drew cartoons illustrating funny and sad experiences that they had together.
Donations in Tony’s memory will go to The UK Network of Dementia Voices and Exeter Dementia Action Alliance.

Sometimes we receive gifts this time of year that are lovely but not what we want or can use. Don’t despair! At TDS we can put them to good use by selling them in our eBay shop.
It’s a win win. We make money for a good cause, someone somewhere gets a lovely item and you can rest content in the knowledge that you are helping others with your gift (and helping to save the planet too - Reduce: reuse: recycle)
